What is telemedicine? As a clinician, I must express that there has never been a worse time to visit an emergency room or urgent care center. I recommend avoiding these areas as much as you medically can because of the increased risk of coming into contact with infectious disease.

Thanks to the recent Covid-19 pandemic, many states have made the decision to implement the practice of social distancing. Being sure to stand 6 feet away from the next person, not attending gatherings larger than 10 people, and wearing face masks while in public have become apart of everyday life. Life has changed as we know it.

As the Corona virus continues to spread, the value of telemedicine has repeatedly been highlighted. So, what exactly is telemedicine and what does it all entail? In short, telemedicine is the act of treating or providing medical consultation via text message, video chat, or email. Telemedicine was initially established in the 1960s to increase access to healthcare services on Native American reservations and in rural areas experiencing a lack of specialists and facilities. Thanks to advancements in technology, the capabilities of telemedicine have grown exponentially. Today, telemedicine has been integrated into hospitals, clinics, and practices worldwide to extend care to patients regardless of physical barriers.

The establishment of telemedicine has expanded the reach of primary care and preventative care. Medical concerns that can be treated via telemedicine such as ear infections or medication refills for blood pressure and diabetic medication etc. can all be done from the comfort of your home.

Telemedicine has been a valuable resource in changing the dynamics of healthcare for those who work during office hours or keep an unusual schedule. You can schedule video appointments or text message consultations. Weekend Whitecoat has integrated telemedicine into its direct primary care practice to provide healthcare that is both comprehensive and convenient. If you or someone you know is struggling to find comprehensive and convenient healthcare, telemedicine may be the solution. Scheduling, consultations, and video visits can be done on your home computer or through the weekend whitecoat app on your phone or tablet.
